Introduction – Why Praia de João Fernandes Is Special

Praia de João Fernandes is one of the better-known beaches in Armação dos Búzios, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. It is quite a small cove with soft golden sand and generally calm, clear water, which makes it suitable for swimming for most of the year.

The beach is surrounded by the low hills that help protect it from the stronger waves, giving it quite a more sheltered feel compared to more open stretches of coastline. Because of this, it tends to attract a mix of visitors, including families and couples, as well as travellers who prefer a more comfortable beach setting rather than rough surf conditions.

There is also quite a noticeable level of development around the area, with pousadas, restaurants and basic beach services nearby. At the same time, the natural setting still remains a key part of the experience especially the view of the bay and the water clarity on the calmer days. Overall, it is often described as one of the more accessible and structured beach areas in Búzios.

Location & How to Reach Praia de João Fernandes

Where Praia de João Fernandes is located

Praia de João Fernandes is located on the northern side of the Búzios peninsula, not far from the central area and the well-known Orla Bardot. It sits in a sheltered bay, close to João Fernandinho and Praia Brava, with a mix of hillside homes and accommodation options around it.

How to reach Praia de João Fernandes

Reaching the beach is generally quite straightforward. From the centre of Búzios, it is only a short drive along paved roads and there are parking areas also available near the entrance, usually for a fee.

Taxis and ride hailing services such as Uber or 99 are commonly used and often the easiest option, especially for visitors staying in different parts of town. The journey typically takes only a few minutes depending on the location.

Another option is by boat or water taxi, which can be taken from Orla Bardot or nearby departure points. This route is more scenic and tends to be preferred in good weather conditions.

For those staying nearby, walking is also actually possible, although the terrain includes some slopes and uneven sections in places.

Overall, the beach is well connected and easy to access, which is one reason it is frequently visited compared to more remote beaches in the region.

Best Time to Visit Praia de João Fernandes

Búzios generally has a warm tropical climate throughout the year, with temperatures staying roughly in between 24°C and 30°C. The beach can be visited in any season actually, but some periods are more comfortable depending on what you are looking for.

From around September to March, the weather is usually more stable with a higher chance of sunny days and less rainfall. This is also the main tourist season, especially between December and February, when the town becomes way busier and prices tend to increase.

Early mornings are often considered the best time of day to visit the beach. The water is usually calmer, lighting is softer for photos and the atmosphere is generally quieter before crowds build up. In the afternoon, winds can become more noticeable depending on the day.

Things to Do at Praia de João Fernandes

Swimming & Beach Relaxation

The beach is known for its calm and generally shallow waters, which makes it suitable for relaxed swimming and floating rather than strong surf. Many visitors spend the day here using beach chairs and umbrellas rented from the barracas along the shore.

Snorkeling & Water Activities

Because of the clear water and rocky edges in some areas, snorkeling is a common activity here, especially on calmer days. Equipment such as masks and snorkels can usually be rented nearby and activities like stand up paddleboarding and kayaking are also often available.

Boat Tours & Island Trips

From João Fernandes or nearby points in Búzios, boat tours regularly operate along the coastline. These trips typically include various stops at several beaches and small islands, offering a wider view of the region beyond the bay.

Photography

The setting is quite photogenic, with views of the curved bay, hillside accommodations, and fishing boats along the shore. Light conditions in the late afternoon are often preferred for softer colours and reflections on the water.

Dining & Evening Atmosphere

There are several restaurants around the beach and in the nearby streets serving seafood and international dishes. In the late afternoon and evening the area tends to feel more lively especially around sunset time when people gather for the meals and drinks.

Travel Tips & Safety

Essentials

It is quite advisable to bring some basic beach essentials such as reef safe sunscreen, a hat and a beach bag for comfort. Both cash and cards are accepted in most places, though having some cash can still be quite useful for smaller purchases. For areas with the rocks, especially if you plan to snorkel, water shoes can make movement more comfortable.

Food & Drink

The beach has a good selection of barracas and nearby restaurants serving seafood, drinks, and full meals. Prices are usually on the higher side compared to less touristy areas which is typical for this part of Búzios.

Safety

Praia de João Fernandes is generally considered safe and suitable for families. Swimming is usually fine in calmer sections, though it is still best to be mindful of occasional currents. Basic precautions with ones personal belongings are recommended, especially during busier hours.

Best Practices

Arriving earlier in the day can actually help secure better spots on the beach, particularly in high season. It is also important to be quite mindful of the environment and respectful toward local vendors and staff. Many visitors choose to combine the visit with nearby beaches such as João Fernandinho or Praia Azeda for a fuller experience of the area.
