Introduction: Why Praia de Camburi Is Special

Praia de Camburi is one of the most admired and famous beaches among the people along the northern coastline of the São Paulo state. Located in the municipality of São Sebastião, it has developed quite a reputation for combining attractive natural scenery with a comfortable visitor experience. A broad strip of golden sand, rolling Atlantic waves and dense green hills form the backdrop of this coastal destination.

Unlike some beaches that become heavily crowded during holiday periods, Camburi generally maintains a pleasant balance between activity and tranquility. Surfers are drawn by the reliable waves, while the families and couples appreciate the relaxed atmosphere and good local facilities. The surrounding Atlantic Forest also contributes greatly to that area’s visual appeal, giving the coastline a distinctly tropical character.

Location & How to Reach Praia de Camburi

Where Praia de Camburi is Located

Praia de Camburi lies on the Litoral Norte of São Paulo, approximately 170 kilometers from the city of São Paulo. It occupies a scenic section of coast between Boicucanga and Maresias, two other well-known beach destinations in the region. Forest covered hills rise behind the shoreline, while a small river flows into the sea near one end of the beach, adding another feature to the landscape.

The area forms part of the broader Costa Verde region, a long stretch of coastline recognized for its rich vegetation, mountainous scenery and numerous beaches.

How to Reach Praia de Camburi

By Car:

Most visitors arrive by their private vehicle. Access is mainly via the Rodovia Rio-Santos (BR-101), one of the principal coastal highways in southeastern Brazil. Depending on traffic conditions, particularly during weekends and holidays, the journey from São Paulo may take between two and a half and four hours.

By Bus:

Regular bus services connect São Paulo with São Sebastião. From there, the local transportation or the taxis can be used to reach Camburi.

By Ride Share or Taxi:

Visitors staying in the neighboring towns such as Maresias, Boicucanga or São Sebastião can also easily reach the beach using many ride share services or even local taxis.

From Nearby Airports:

Travelers arriving through São Paulo Guarulhos Airport or São José dos Campos Airport often continue the journey by a rental car or even an arranged transfer.

What Makes Praia de Camburi Unique

One aspect that distinguishes Camburi is its very ability to appeal to different types of travelers without losing its identity. The beach is quite long and relatively wide, providing ample space even during the busier periods. Surf conditions are generally favorable throughout much of the year, particularly in the central and southern sections where the waves are particularly more consistent.

Near the river mouth, sea conditions may be somewhat gentler, attracting swimmers and families. The combination of river, forest, hills, and ocean creates a varied landscape rarely found in a single location.

Another notable characteristic is the village atmosphere behind the beach. Stylish guesthouses, boutique accommodations, restaurants and cafés are integrated into the natural surroundings rather than dominating them entirely. Large scale urban development remains actually limited, which helps preserve the area’s charm.

Best Time to Visit Praia de Camburi

The region experiences a warm and humid coastal climate throughout the year. Seasonal differences exist, although temperatures generally remain pleasant.

December to March:

These months correspond to the summer season and attract the highest number of the visitors. Warm weather, longer daylight hours and many lively beach activity make this the busiest period of the year.

May to August:

Many surfers prefer these months because wave quality can improve, with larger and cleaner swells arriving from the South Atlantic. Rainfall may occur, and temperatures are slightly cooler than summer.

Weekends and Holidays:

Visitor numbers increase significantly, especially among residents of São Paulo seeking short coastal escapes.

Things to Do at Praia de Camburi

Surfing and Bodyboarding

Camburi has long been associated with surfing. Waves are actually suitable for various skill levels, though conditions can vary depending on weather and swell direction. Surf schools and equipment rental shops operate near the beach, making overall participation relatively easy even for beginners.

Swimming and Relaxation

For visitors seeking a quieter experience, spending time on the sand remains one of the simplest pleasures. Several beach kiosks provide umbrellas, chairs, snacks and refreshments throughout the day. Conditions for swimming vary and should always be assessed carefully.

Exploring the River Area

The small river that meets the sea creates an interesting environment where the fresh and salt water come together. Many visitors enjoy walking along this section of the beach, particularly during the periods of lower tide. The scenery here is slightly different from the open shoreline and offers attractive views.

Photography

Photography enthusiasts often find plenty of subjects in Camburi. Forested hills, golden sand, moving waves and changing light conditions create opportunities throughout the day.

Dining and Evening Atmosphere

The area surrounding the beach offers a surprisingly diverse food scene. Fresh seafood is widely available, alongside the Brazilian and international dishes. During summer evenings, restaurants and bars become more active, though the atmosphere usually remains quite relaxed rather than excessively crowded.

Travel Tips & Safety

Essentials:

Betterarry sunscreen, a hat, drinking water and a pair of suitable footwear for ease. Those planning to surf should either bring their own equipment or can also confirm rental availability beforehand.

Food and Drink:

Dining options range from few simple beach kiosks to more refined fancy restaurants. Seafood dishes remain among the most popular choices, particularly fish, shrimp and even some regional specialties.

Safety:

Ocean conditions can change quickly. Waves and currents may be stronger than they first appear, therefore visitors should pay attention to warning signs and lifeguard guidance if any whenever they are available. Personal belongings should not be left unattended, especially during the busy periods.

Useful Advice:

Arriving earlier in the day usually makes the parking easier and provides more choice of beach space. Many travelers combine Camburi with nearby beaches such as Maresias or Boicucanga, creating a full-day coastal itinerary.
