Introduction – Why Praia da Ferradurinha Stands Out

Praia da Ferradurinha is often described as one of the most attractive small beaches in Armação dos Búzios. Although Búzios is home to numerous well known beaches, Ferradurinha occupies a somewhat different place among them. Smaller in scale and tucked away inside a sheltered bay, it offers a much quieter atmosphere than many of the peninsula’s busier coastal areas.

The name “Ferradurinha” meaning “Little Horseshoe,” derives from the curved shape of the cove. Surrounded by rocky headlands and green hillsides, the beach presents quite a remarkably scenic setting. The sea is generally calm, clear and shallow near the shore, the conditions that make it suitable for swimming and other low impact water activities.

Unlike some of Búzios’ more crowded beaches, Ferradurinha retains a comparatively intimate character. Even during the high season, it often feels less hectic than central beaches such as Geribá or João Fernandes. This quieter environment attracts couples, families with children and also visitors who simply wish to spend a relaxed day by the sea.

Its combination of accessible location, natural beauty, and peaceful ambiance has made Praia da Ferradurinha one of the peninsula’s most appreciated hidden corners.

Location and How to Reach Praia da Ferradurinha

Praia da Ferradurinha lies on the southern side of the Búzios peninsula, close to Praia da Ferradura and not far from Geribá. The beach is enclosed within a protected inlet bordered by residential hillsides and areas of preserved vegetation.

Despite its somewhat secluded appearance, access is relatively straightforward.

By Car or Ride-Share

Travelling by car or ride-share service is probably the most convenient option for most visitors. From the center of Búzios, the journey usually takes between ten and fifteen minutes, depending on traffic conditions.

Parking is available near the beach entrance, although spaces can become scarce during weekends, holidays and the summer season.

By Water Taxi or Boat

Some visitors prefer arriving by sea. Water taxis and excursion boats occasionally include Ferradurinha among their stops, particularly during sightseeing tours around the peninsula. Approaching the beach from the water provides particularly attractive views of the coastline.

On Foot

Walking to Ferradurinha is possible from nearby beaches, although the route involves several uphill and downhill sections. The walk generally requires between twenty and thirty minutes, depending on pace and starting point.

Those choosing this option should wear comfortable footwear, especially during the warmer periods.

Through Buggy Tours

Buggy excursions remain a classic activity in Búzios and many operators include Ferradurinha as part of their itineraries. This can be a practical way to visit several beaches within a single day.

Once visitors arrive, the beach itself is relatively compact and can easily be explored on foot.

What Makes Praia da Ferradurinha Unique?

Ferradurinha’s principal attraction is undoubtedly its setting. The beach occupies a nearly enclosed bay whose calm waters are protected by surrounding rocky formations. Because wave action is usually minimal, the sea often resembles a natural swimming pool.

Water clarity is another notable feature. During favorable weather conditions, visibility can be excellent, particularly near the rocky edges of the cove. This has contributed to the beach’s popularity among snorkelers and many casual swimmers.

The landscape also deserves mention. Rocky cliffs, native vegetation, and green hills frame the bay, producing scenery that many visitors consider among the most picturesque in Búzios. From elevated viewpoints nearby, the horseshoe shape of the beach becomes especially evident.

Ferradurinha additionally maintains a more relaxed atmosphere than several of Búzios’ major tourist beaches. Large crowds, loud music and intense commercial activity are generally less common here, which appeals to the travellers seeking a quieter environment.

Best Time to Visit

Búzios experiences pleasant weather for much of the year, although certain periods offer particularly favorable conditions.

September to March: Typically brings sunnier weather and much warmer sea temperatures, making these months highly suitable for swimming.

Morning hours: Usually provide the calmest water conditions as well as softer light for photography.

Weekdays: Tend to be noticeably much quieter than weekends, especially outside the holiday periods.

Late afternoon: Offers beautiful lighting and slightly cooler temperatures, creating quite a particularly pleasant atmosphere.

Visitors planning to photograph the beach may find early morning and late afternoon especially rewarding.

Things to Do at Praia da Ferradurinha

Swimming and Relaxation

Many visitors come simply to enjoy the sea. The sheltered waters are generally calm and inviting, allowing for comfortable swimming even for the less experienced swimmers.

The beach’s modest size contributes to quite an intimate and relaxed atmosphere that encourages longer stays.

Snorkeling

The rocky sections bordering the cove provide favorable conditions for snorkeling. Small fish and other marine species can often be observed close to the shore, particularly when the sea is much calm and visibility is good.

Equipment may be rented locally during busier periods, although availability can vary.

Photography

Praia da Ferradurinha offers numerous opportunities for photography. The combination of turquoise water, granite formations, green hills and the anchored boats creates a visually appealing landscape throughout the day.

Images captured from nearby elevated viewpoints are especially impressive.

Boat Excursions

Several schooner and speedboat tours operating in Búzios include stops near Ferradurinha.

Dining and Beach Life

Although Ferradurinha is relatively small, a handful of beach establishments provide food, drinks, and seating areas. Fresh seafood dishes, snacks, tropical beverages, and light meals are commonly available.

Dining while overlooking the bay forms part of the experience for many visitors.

Travel Tips and Safety

Because sun exposure can be intense, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and adequate hydration are strongly recommended.

Water shoes may prove useful near rocky areas, particularly for visitors intending to snorkel or explore the edges of the cove.

Praia da Ferradurinha is generally regarded as safe and family-oriented. Even so, visitors should continue exercising normal precautions with their personal belongings, especially during the busiest months.

During the high season, arriving early in the day is advisable, as both parking spaces and the prime locations on the sand may become limited.
