Lagoa do Paraíso is regarded as one of the more well-known freshwater attractions in the vicinity of Jericoacoara, located in the state of Ceará in northeastern Brazil. The lagoon is often associated with turquoise-colored water and is frequently shown in travel references with hammocks placed over the shallow sections of water. In comparison to the nearby ocean coastline and surrounding dune formations, it presents a noticeably calmer environment and is commonly included as part of guided buggy routes departing from Jericoacoara, where it is presented as a representative lagoon stop.

Introduction: Why This Place Is Special

The lagoon lies outside the official limits of Jericoacoara National Park and is set within a landscape of white sand dunes with only sparse vegetation, typical of a semi arid region. Its waters are notably clear and remain shallow over wide areas, creating a gentle, pool like setting where the sandy bottom is often visible and soft underfoot. Because of these conditions, the site is used more for relaxation and bathing rather than for active ocean-based beach activities.

Its identity is largely shaped by the presence of freshwater with high transparency, the surrounding dune formations, and simple visitor facilities such as hammocks and seating placed close to or within the water.

These elements together create an environment that is noticeably different from typical coastal beaches. The site is often visited by couples, photographers, and individuals who prefer a quieter setting, along with families who are looking for a more relaxed type of outing. It is also frequently included within combined tour routes that pass through the surrounding dunes, so that visitors are able to observe multiple landscape types within a single visit.

Location & How to Reach

The lagoon is situated at a relatively short distance from Jericoacoara village and is commonly accessed through dune buggy or 4×4 vehicle tours. Jericoacoara itself can be reached from Fortaleza, which is approximately 300 kilometres away, or alternatively via the smaller Cruz airport, depending on travel arrangements.

The most commonly used approach is to stay within Jericoacoara village and join either a half-day or full-day buggy excursion, which often includes Lagoa do Paraíso along with other nearby lagoon stops. In addition, shared vans and collective transport services are also available from the village for local movement. A small access or service charge, typically around R$30, may be applied for entry and use of facilities, although this can vary slightly.

Travel time from Jericoacoara village is generally in the range of 30 to 60 minutes by buggy, depending on route conditions through the dunes.

What Makes This Beach Unique

The “beach” area in this location is formed by fine white sand that surrounds the lagoon rather than an open ocean shoreline. The water is known for its high clarity and distinct turquoise tones, and it is often shallow enough to allow wading and light swimming without the presence of ocean currents or strong wave action.

The natural setting is defined by white sand dunes, scattered palm trees, and a clear contrast between the calm freshwater body and the surrounding semi-arid landscape. One of the more distinctive features includes hammocks placed directly over the water, along with simple beach bars that contribute to a relaxed and visually appealing environment, often described as highly photogenic compared to conventional coastal beaches. In addition, nearby dune areas provide further scope for exploration and short excursions within the same region.

Things to Do

Swimming and floating in the warm, clear waters are generally considered the primary activities at the lagoon, as the conditions are usually calm and suitable for visitors of different ages. Water-based activities are limited in scope, although in certain areas stand-up paddleboarding and kayaking may be available, depending on local arrangements and conditions.

Photography is commonly practiced, with frequent focus on the hammocks placed over the water, the transparency of the lagoon, and the surrounding dune landscape in the background. Resting on loungers or within hammocks is also a central part of the experience for many visitors, as the setting is largely oriented toward relaxation.

In addition, small beach cafés are present in some sections, offering light refreshments and seating where visitors may remain while observing the surroundings. Buggy-based excursions often include this lagoon as part of a wider itinerary, typically combined with other lagoon stops or dune areas within a single day tour.

Best Time to Visit

The period generally considered most suitable corresponds with Jericoacoara’s dry season, which runs from approximately July to December. During this period, rainfall remains relatively low, and the water in the lagoon generally stays clearer, with temperatures that are usually comfortable for most visitors. The lagoon is accessible throughout the year; however, the dry season is commonly preferred, as weather conditions tend to be more stable and visibility in the water is often better during these months.

The climate during this time is typically warm and sunny, with consistent regional winds that are present in the wider area, though the lagoon itself remains relatively sheltered and is not strongly affected by them. Visitor numbers tend to rise during peak tour schedules and holiday periods, which can result in a more active atmosphere at certain times of the day.

Travel Tips & Safety

Direct lifeguard-type supervision is limited in this area, although the waters are generally shallow and calm, which makes conditions relatively safe under normal circumstances. Still, exposure to strong sunlight in the open dune environment can be quite intense, so proper sun protection and regular hydration is quite necessary throughout the visit.

The site is typically kept in a reasonably clean condition, helped by both visitor activity and ongoing local maintenance efforts. It is also widely considered safe within the broader Jericoacoara region. An entrance fee is usually charged, which is used for the maintenance and upkeep of the area.
