Montara State Beach Travel Guide: Golden Sands, Whale Watching, and Coastal Walks

Montara State Beach is one of the stunning coastal area that remains largely undeveloped and natural in character. It is situated in Montara, within San Mateo County, at a distance of roughly 20 miles south of San Francisco, along Highway 1.

The beach extends for about one mile and is known for its fine, golden sand, steep coastal bluffs, and areas of exposed rock that form tide pools at low tide. The shoreline directly faces the Pacific Ocean, resulting in regular wave activity throughout the year. Behind the beach are patches of coastal scrub and nearby residential neighborhoods, while the southern end gradually connects with trails leading into Montara Mountain.

The area is under the care of California State Parks. Responsibilities include providing lifeguard supervision during selected seasons, maintaining beach access routes, and carrying out environmental work such as sand dune rehabilitation and observation of marine animals.

Montara State Beach is most often visited by nearby residents, surfers, walkers, and people arriving from the Bay Area who look for a calmer place when compared with beaches in Half Moon Bay or Pacifica. Because it lies directly along the coastal highway, it is also commonly used as a short stopping point for those travelling through the rugged coastline of the San Francisco Peninsula.

Fun Fact about Montara State Beach

Montara State Beach is counted among the limited number of coastal sites in the San Francisco Bay Area where migrating gray whales are regularly observed during certain months of the year. From roughly December through April, whales traveling south from Alaska toward Baja California may be seen offshore. The raised coastal bluffs along the beach allow clear viewing positions, and the headland setting gives wide, mostly unobstructed sightlines over the Pacific Ocean migration path, especially on calm and clear days.

Things to Do at Montara State Beach

Montara State Beach offers several outdoor uses that fit its open and rugged coastline, and most visits remain simple and nature-focused rather than resort oriented.

Surfing is common, as the beach receives steady waves that are generally suitable for experienced or intermediate surfers, more so during winter swell periods.

Walking or light running along the broad sand is possible, with informal routes continuing toward Gray Whale Cove to the south and in the direction of Montara Mountain to the north.

At low tide, the rocky edges allow limited tide pool access, where anemones, starfish, hermit crabs, and other small marine species can be noticed.

Short walks along the bluff-top paths provide higher viewpoints across the Pacific, and on very clear days distant urban outlines may be visible.

During the migration season, roughly December to April, whale observation from the bluffs is common, with gray whales often passing offshore.

Picnics are permitted near the parking area or directly on the beach surface, though open fires are not allowed.

Quiet rest on the sand or portable seating is possible, but shade is minimal and mostly dependent on the bluff edges.

Marine mammals such as harbor seals, and at times sea otters, may be seen close to shore.

The setting is well suited for photography, especially of coastal landforms and open ocean views during early morning or late evening light.

Swimming is allowed, however it is not a primary activity here. Cold water, shifting currents, and occasional rip tides require caution, and posted notices should be followed without exception.

How to Get to Montara State Beach

Montara State Beach is accessed directly from Highway 1, which runs along this very section of the coast.

From San Francisco, the drive usually takes around 30 to 45 minutes by heading south on Highway 1, covering roughly 20 miles depending on traffic.

From San Jose, travel time is generally about 45 to 60 minutes, using Highway 92 to connect with Highway 1 and then continuing north.

Public transportation is also possible. Bus services operated by SamTrans, including Routes 17 and 110 from San Francisco or Pacifica, stop nearby, after which a short walk or brief taxi ride is needed.

A public parking area is located at the main beach entrance. The daily fee is about $10 USD, payable by cash or card, though spaces often fill early during summer months, sometimes before late morning.

Visitors are advised to arrive earlier in the day during peak season, as roadside and overflow parking options are limited.

Optimal Periods for Visitation

The months from March through May, as well as September to November, are generally considered the most favorable times to visit. During these periods, weather conditions are usually moderate, with temperatures ranging between 55 and 70 °F (13–21 °C), visitor numbers remain relatively lower, and visibility is often suitable for activities such as whale observation and tide pool exploration.

June to August represents the main summer season. Temperatures are slightly warmer, commonly between 65 and 75 °F (18–24 °C), however the area experiences heavier crowds, and coastal fog caused by the marine layer is not uncommon, especially during mornings.

From December to February, conditions tend to be cooler, with temperatures mostly in the 50–65 °F (10–18 °C) range. Storm systems may occur at times, yet breaks in weather can result in clear skies, stronger surf, and notable whale activity along the coast.
