Moonstone Beach Travel Guide: Tide Pools, Moonstone Agates, and Coastal Walks in Cambria

Moonstone Beach is a coastal area in the village of Cambria, in San Luis Obispo County, California. The shoreline stretches about 1 mile and is mostly rocky, with small patches of coarse sand. There are several interesting rock formations, tide pools, and steady waves. Behind the beach, a low bluff rises with a paved boardwalk, and nearby are some homes and small inns.

The beach is managed by the City of Cambria together with the California Coastal Commission, which looks after upkeep, public access, and environmental protection such as preserving tide pools and managing erosion. Moonstone Beach gets its name from moonstone agates that sometimes wash up on the shore. It attracts visitors for walking, collecting stones, photography, or just enjoying a quieter place than the busier beaches in Morro Bay or Pismo Beach. Its spot along Highway 1 makes it easy for the travelers moving between Big Sur and San Luis Obispo to visit.

Unique Feature of Moonstone Beach

Moonstone Beach is known for the moonstone agates that appear along the shore, mostly after storms. These stones are milky and partly translucent, and sometimes pieces of jade and other minerals are found, which makes it interesting for people who like to collect or explore. The rocky areas also have many tide pools at low tide, showing different kinds of marine life like anemones, starfish, hermit crabs and small fish.

Things to Do at Moonstone Beach

Moonstone Beach offers a number of quiet and exploring activities suited to its rocky shore and scenic views:

Searching for moonstone agates, jade, and other small stones along the sand, especially after storms in winter when new stones appear.

Exploring tide pools at low tide on the rocky areas, where marine creatures like anemones, starfish, hermit crabs, and little fish can be seen.

Walking along the Moonstone Beach Boardwalk, about 1 mile long which runs near the beach and provides the nice views of the ocean.

Photographing the coastline, rock shapes, and ocean, especially near sunrise or sunset when the light is best.

Relaxing on the sand or in portable chairs, though there is little shade from the bluffs.

Taking short walks on nearby coastal trails for higher views of the beach and Pacific Ocean.

Visiting the nearby places such as the Fiscalini Ranch Preserve or Cambria Cemetery for extra scenery and the local history.

Picnicking in areas set aside along the boardwalk or on the sand.

Swimming is not quite recommended because of strong currents and rocky areas as the beach is mainly for resting, exploring, looking for stones and photography.

How to Get to Moonstone Beach

Moonstone Beach can be reached using Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway):

From San Luis Obispo: about 30–40 minutes by car going north on Highway 1, roughly 25 miles.

From Monterey: around 2–2.5 hours driving south on Highway 1.

From Los Angeles: 4–5 hours by car, taking US-101 north to Highway 1.

Parking is available in public lots along Moonstone Beach Drive, usually $2–$5 per hour, or at the boardwalk access points, though these spots have time limits.

Best Time to Visit

The best times to visit Moonstone Beach are generally from March to May and again from September to November, when the weather is mild (around 55–70 °F / 13–21 °C), crowds are smaller, and conditions are good for tide pooling and searching for stones along the shore. June through August is the summer peak, with warmer temperatures (65–75 °F / 18–24 °C) but more visitors and sometimes marine fog. December to February brings cooler weather (50–65 °F / 10–18 °C) and occasional storms, though clear days after winter swells can make for dramatic waves and excellent beachcombing.

Practical Tips for Visiting

It is recommended to check tide schedules before coming, as the lowest tides give the best access to tide pools and areas for collecting stones. Parking meters accept cash or card, and street parking is limited in time. Visitors should use sun protection, high SPF sunscreen, hats and sunglasses, because sunlight reflects strongly off both sand and water. Swimming is generally not quite advised due to the strong currents and rocky conditions.

Nearby accommodations in Cambria or San Simeon are also readily available, with typical the nightly rates ranging from around $150–$400 USD. Visitors should follow environmental rules, avoid littering, and use reef-safe sunscreen. The beach is quite safe for daytime visits but valuables should be secured in vehicles and unlit areas should be avoided around dusk.

History of Moonstone Beach

The land now called Moonstone Beach was originally home to the Chumash Native Americans for thousands of years, who used the shore for fishing and gathering resources. European explorers first arrived in the 16th century, and later Mexican land grants were issued in the 1830s.

In the late 19th century, the area became part of the growing Cambria settlement. The beach was used for driftwood collection and local recreation. The name “Moonstone” appeared in the early 20th century because of the many moonstone agates that washed ashore after winter storms.

The beach became more popular in the 1950s and 1960s as Highway 1 brought more tourists, and small inns and eateries opened along Moonstone Beach Drive. The 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake caused some minor bluff damage, but the beach recovered quickly.
