Published in 1651 by English philosopher Thomas Hobbes, Leviathan outlines the necessity of a strong, centralized government to prevent societal chaos. Hobbes argues that without a sovereign, humans in their "state of nature" are driven by self-interest, resulting in a perpetual state of war where life is notoriously "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short".
