Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol follows Pavel Ivanovich Chichikov, an ambitious former bureaucrat. Chichikov travels the Russian countryside visiting eccentric landowners to buy the names of deceased serfs who are still legally listed on government census rolls. He plans to mortgage these “dead souls” to amass a fortune.
