Discourses is a collection of practical Stoic lectures by the philosopher Epictetus, transcribed by his student Arrian. The text teaches that peace and freedom come from distinguishing between what is within our control (our judgments, actions, and desires) and what is not (externals like wealth, reputation, and illness).
